Artists on Art: MSHR

On select Friday nights at 6:15 p.m., artists will talk about their work and present sonic experiences in the intimate setting of The World Is Sound exhibition.

This week’s edition features the art collective MSHR in conversation with the Rubin Museum’s Head of Interpretation and Engagement, Jane Hsu. MSHR’s work is represented in the current exhibition The World Is Sound.

Admission to the Museum’s galleries is free every Friday from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Tickets for the talk are free but limited in availability and given on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 5:45 p.m. Limit two tickets per person.

An ASL interpreter will be present at the event.

About the Artist

MSHR is the art collective of Birch Cooper and Brenna Murphy. Their work meshes digital sculpture, analog circuitry, and ceremonial performance. The duo builds and explores cybernetic systems using synthesizers of their own design. For exhibitions, they install macro-arrangements of these sculptural instruments to create immersive light-sound-scapes. In their performances, they engage the systems through a series of unique interfaces. They also work with 3D modeling programs to design virtual forms that are output as images and sculptures with the use of digital fabrication. MSHR’s sculptural, musical, and electronic work inform each other deeply, creating the meta-form that is their collaborative practice.

MSHR emerged from the art collective Oregon Painting Society in 2011. They were artists in residence at Sonoscopia, 2014; Eyebeam, 2014; Pioneer Works, 2016; Signal Culture, 2016. They are represented by Upfor, Portland.
