WE BELONG HERE: Dismantling AAPI Racism and Violence
Online Panel Discussion Himalayan Heritage
Wednesday, 5.19.21
5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities have long experienced racism, harassment, and violence, which have been magnified during the COVID-19 pandemic and culture wars.
In this virtual program, held in honor of AAPI Heritage Month, unpack some of the complexities that contribute to violence against AAPI people, including how issues of gender and racial injustice intertwine to target Asian American women of all ages, and how the myth of the model minority and submissiveness, as well as the oversexualization of women, contributes to gender-based violence. You’ll also hear how AAPI communities are fighting back for change!
Join leaders at the forefront of AAPI advocacy, education, and community engagement: Jo-Ann Yoo, executive director of the Asian American Federation; Dechen Tsering, co-founder of the ACHA Himalayan Sisterhood and co-founder of the Himalayan COVID-19 Task Force; and moderator Mary Luke, board member of UN Women USA. The panel will discuss the factors that lead to AAPI hate crimes; community-based and marginalized Asian diaspora perspectives; and what’s needed to change societal attitudes and behavior.
This program is hosted by Tashi Chodron, Himalayan Cultural Programs and Partnerships, Rubin Museum of Art, and followed by a Q&A.
