2014 Rubin Museum Film Screenings

The Epic of Everest

The Rubin Museum hosted the New York premiere of a magnificent restoration of one of the most historically significant films of all time, The Epic of Everest. Documenting the doomed attempt of George Mallory and Sandy Irvine to scale the world’s highest mountain in 1924, the film has been newly restored by the British Film Institute and features a mesmerizing new score by Simon Fisher Turner.

A number of organizations co-presented select screenings of the film, including Alpinist magazine and Outward Bound. A trailer of The Epic of Everest can be viewed here.

Faith Connections

How do you find a child missing among 100 million pilgrims?

The Rubin Museum presented the U.S. theatrical premiere of Pan Nalin’s heart-rending documentary telling the story of three children–one abandoned, one absconded, and one abducted during the 2013 spiritual ritual Kumbh Mela – the largest gathering of humans on earth.

Screenings of Faith Connections took place during September 2014. Click here to watch a trailer of the film.

Cabaret Cinema

On Fridays at 9:30pm, the Rubin screens world cinema classics that touch on themes featured in the Museum’s galleries. Among the highlights of our 2014 Cabaret Cinema series were Crimes and Misdemeanors (introduced by Patrick McGrath), Fitzcarraldo (introduced by Josh Korda), Cool Hand Luke (introduced by Gregory Mosher), and Salo (introduced by Karole Armitage).

Lunch Matters

On select Wednesdays, the Museum hosts lunchtime screenings of short documentaries followed by moderated discussions. Visitors are welcome to bring their lunch from the museum café into the theater for this program. Souls of Zen, The Best of Brainwave 2013, Spirits of Africa, and Phantom India were among our 2014 Lunch Matters offerings.
