Pair of Cymbals (rolmo)

Cymbals are used in monastic ensembles during ceremonies and ritual dances. A pair of cymbals is played with clashing, rolling, rotating, and muting techniques. Cymbals and drums are usually played together to accompany communal recitations and chanting. This pair of domed cymbals, or rolmo, which resemble hats when viewed from the side, produce a pleasing and clear sound. They are made from a light metal alloy that is thick at the center of the cymbals and thins out toward their edges, which probably contributes to their rich tone. Their handles are made from blue silk ceremonial scarves, or khadak, popular among Mongolian Buddhists.
