At this curator talk, exclusively for Rubin Museum members, Elena Pakhoutova, Senior Curator, Himalayan Art, will present the new exhibition Awaken: A Tibetan Buddhist Journey Toward Enlightenment.

Awaken presents the Tibetan Buddhist path to enlightenment with 37 artworks from the 7th to the 21st century, drawn largely from the collections of the Rubin Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Curator Elena Pakhoutova will highlight several artworks and connect them to the narrative of the exhibition. A Q&A session will follow.

Elena Pakhoutova is Senior Curator, Himalayan Art, at the Rubin Museum. Tibetan Buddhist studies inform her interdisciplinary approach to art history. Her research explores dialogues in the visual traditions of Inner Asia, art and ritual, art production and patronage, text and image, and narrative in Tibetan visual culture. Among her other interests are cross-cultural exchange, material culture, and contemporary Tibetan art.
