Diwali Celebration and Art-Making With The Culture Tree
Join us for a bilingual story time with The Culture Tree to get ready for Diwali!
Also known as the festival of lights, Diwali is India’s most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, as told in the Hindu epic Ramayana. The five-day celebration of Diwali includes good food, friends, family, fireworks, rangolis, and lighting of diya lamps.
At this special story hour, hear some of the folktales, history, and legends behind this beautiful celebration and see how it’s celebrated in India.
About the Instructor
Anu Sehgal is the, founder of The Culture Tree, which provides South Asian–themed classes and programs. She notes “As a cultural educator, I am looking forward to providing children with authentic, immersive, and inspiring experiences. Events like the Rubin Museum of Art’s Family Sunday Diwali Celebration provide that platform where children learn about another culture and country.” Through events like this, we can offer cross-cultural exposure and literacy that can help develop knowledgeable, open-minded, and respectful individuals.”
The Culture Tree provides South Asian– themed educational and cultural programs that enrich the lives of children and their families and promotes a deeper connection with their roots and the world around them.
