We are excited to share the Docent Book Club with Rubin members again this July with a discussion of the book How to Relax, by world-renowned Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, which introduces the essentials of mindfulness practice.

How to Relax is the fifth book in the bestselling Mindfulness Essentials series, a back-to-basics collection.With sections on healing, relief from nonstop thinking, transforming unpleasant sounds, solitude, finding peace, and more, How to Relax includes meditations to help you achieve the benefits of relaxation no matter where you are.

Read the book and join us on July 27 to share your thoughts. The discussion will be led by Rubin Docent Harry Miller and moderated by Benno Orlinsky, Rubin Museum Coordinator of Visitor Experience and Interpretation.

About the Docent Book Club

The Rubin Museum docents are a group of intensively trained volunteers who complete a 15-week training period and conceptualize thematic tours for visitors as part of their preparation. The Rubin docents host a book club in their spare time, meeting regularly to explore in depth nonfiction and fiction related to their training and the collection of the Museum.

About the Speaker

Harry Miller has studied Buddhist meditation for over 40 years. He was a student of the renowned Zen teacher Chan Master Sheng-yen for 30 years. Miller edited the Chan Newsletter for over ten years and has contributed articles and translations to Chan Magazine. In addition to leading the Westchester Chan Meditation Group, he teaches meditation and philosophy at the Chan Meditation Center in Queens. He has given talks at the Columbia University Buddhist Association, Hunter College, St. Joseph’s College, All Souls Unitarian Church, and at the Dharma Drum Retreat Center in Pine Bush, NY, where he was also a board member. He holds a BA in French and English literature from Sarah Lawrence College, an MA in Chinese literature and an MPhil in comparative literature from Columbia University. He recently translated Master Sheng-yen’s book Right and Wrong Require a Gentle Approach from Chinese.
