Daniel Gortler and Anthony de Mare
Seasonality, Cycles, and Fertility Rites
Friday, 10.28.16
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Inspired by the Rubin’s current exhibition Nepalese Seasons: Rain and Ritual, pianists Daniel Gortler and Anthony de Mare present Seasonality, Cycles and Fertility Rites, a concert of solo and four-hand piano works echoing the exhibition’s emphasis on the significance of ritual and the seasons to all cultures and life. In works dating from 1808 to the present, this program highlights a diverse range of composers’ musical celebrations of our natural environment, from its mystery, majesty, and spiritual beauty to our present concerns about the threats to its existence.
About the Musicians
Anthony De Mare is one of the world’s foremost champions of contemporary music. Praised by the New York Times for his “muscularly virtuosic, remarkably uninhibited performance [and] impressive talents,” his versatility has inspired the creation of more than sixty new works by some of today’s most distinguished artists, especially in the speaking-singing pianist genre, which he pioneered over twenty-five years ago with the premiere of Frederic Rzewski’s groundbreaking De Profundis. As the creator, performer, and co-producer of Liaisons: Re-Imagining Sondheim from the Piano, he has been featured on HBO and NPR’s All Things Considered in addition to performances at Lincoln Center, Zankel Hall, Symphony Space, and across the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. He is currently a professor of piano at Manhattan School of Music and New York University and also serves as new music curator for the Sheen Center for Thought and Culture.
Daniel Gortler is an acclaimed Israeli pianist. He has performed as a soloist with the Houston, San Francisco, New World, Israel, and London symphony orchestras and under such notable conductors as Zubin Mehta and Christoph Eschenbach. Gortler has given recitals at Wigmore Hall, Symphony Space, The Jewish Museum, and Lincoln Center. He is a 1987 laureate of the Vina del Mar and winner of the Bremen, Munich, and Geneva competitions. Gortler is a founding member of the Tel-Aviv Schubertiade festival and a faculty member at Tel Aviv University. He is a graduate of the Rubin Music Academy and the Musikhochschule in Hanover, Germany,.
